Carnegie Mellon University, also referred to as Carnegie Mellon or simply CMU, is a private research university in Pittsburgh, which is the 2nd largest city in the U.S. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, also serving as the county seat of Allegheny County, having an estimated population of more than 311 000 inhabitants (2009).
The university was established in 1900, by Andrew Carnegie, and first started as the Carnegie Technical Schools, 12 years later becoming Carnegie Institute of Technology, adopting its current name in 1967, when it merged with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research. Through its 7 colleges and independent schools, CMU offers its students various educational programs, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, being recognized for `its world-class arts and technology programs, collaboration across disciplines and innovative leadership in education.`
CMU's athletic teams are nicknamed the Tartans and they compete in NCAA Division III, UAA, with 17 sports teams. Their distinctive colors are cardinal, gray and Tartan plaid. The school official mascot is the Scottish Terrier.
